What is a carpenter's workbench and what is its use?
The carpenter's workbench is, for those who practice this profession, the most precious of tools. It consists of a heavy and sturdy wooden top (usually beech or ash) supported by four legs and has a height that allows the carpenter to work comfortably. The work surface always has holes into which the locking irons (called bench dogs) are inserted and a large vice whose function is to keep the pieces being worked on still.
