What is a frame saw and what was its use?
It is a tool consisting of a frame in the shape of an enlarged “H”, composed of three intersecting wooden strips (two uprights and a crosspiece). The blade is fixed to the lower part of the uprights, perpendicular to the crosspiece. A hemp rope is fixed to the upper part of the uprights, which serves to give the right tension to the blade. The tension can be adjusted thanks to the presence and rotary movement of a wooden slat (the tensioner), around which the rope itself is wrapped (by rotating the slat the blade is tensioned). The adjustment of the inclination of the blade, and therefore the definition of the cutting angle, is obtained thanks to the presence of two pins on the uprights. The tool was held by grasping one of the two uprights and was operated by applying an alternating push and pull movement.
