What is the structure of bovine hooves?
The hooves of cattle are made of keratin and appear as two separate nails that cover the phalanges of the third and fourth toes. On top of the leg are the smaller claws or dewclaws. These claws, similar to hooves, are worn down as the animal walks. In situations where the animal is not moving for long periods, such as during winter housing, it is necessary to cut and level the excess nails to ensure proper support of the foot and prevent damage to the limbs.
