What is the cart?
The cart is a vehicle for transporting materials (hay, firewood, stones, etc.), animals and goods, composed of a flat platform (the bed) that supports the load and wheels that allow it to move. The cart could have two wheels (barroccio, small cart) or four wheels (ladder cart, flatbed cart). It was adapted to the type of load being transported and there were carts with a bucket or box, hay carts with racks, carts without a platform (for transporting long wood) or pole carts. The cart was pulled mainly by oxen (using a yoke) or horses (using a collar). For towing, the cart was equipped either with a two-shaft drawbar (two wooden shafts placed at the front of the cart and spaced apart to accommodate the draft animal), if the towing was done with a single animal, or with a drawbar (a long shaft placed at the front and center of the cart), if the towing was done with pairs of animals. Some carts were designed for interchangeability between the drawbar and the two-shaft drawbar.
The cart was built by the cartwright.
