What is the carro matto (carr matt)?
The carro matto is attested in various locations with different characteristics but in Mendrisiotto the “carr matt” indicates the cart intended for transporting blocks of marble from the mountain (Arzo quarries) to the plain.
It is a four-wheeled cart, with the rear wheels much smaller than the front ones: this feature allowed the loading platform to remain horizontal when descending steep roads, preventing the heavy marble blocks from shifting towards the draft animals pulling the cart. This cart could transport blocks of marble weighing up to 15 tons and was pulled by several pairs of oxen.
