What is the hand drill and what was it used for?
The hand drill is a metal shaft with a ring at the top and a handle inserted through it and a sharp helical tip on the lower part. It was used to make deep holes into wood. The cartwright used a drill equipped with a large sharp tip to drill the block of wood that would become the center of the cart wheel (hub). The tool was operated with both hands, giving a rotary motion to the shaft by means of the handle and applying pressure onto the surface to be drilled.
