How was the rim shaped?
The metal bar was shaped using an iron block, a special anvil with round-section grooves of different sizes that allowed for manual bending. The iron block was replaced over time by the calender, a tool consisting of a series of rollers that allowed the rim to be shaped much more quickly. The pressure exerted by the rollers, operated by a crank, compressed the metal, forcing it to bend.
