In carts, the axle is a metal bar that connects the pairs of wheels (front wheel with front wheel, rear wheel with rear wheel). In the cart construction process, it was the cartwright who was responsible for its fabrication, forging it from a square-section iron bar and drilling holes at the ends to allow the wheels to be mounted and locked in the axle (thanks to the axle pin).
