What is meant by manual transport?
“Manual transport” refers to the transfer of materials or people from one place to another using human strength. The load could be carried on the body (basket, saddlebag, pannier, cádola, etc.) or by using hand-held vehicles (wheelbarrow, cart, sled, etc.).
The choice between direct body transport or the use of tools often depended on the quantity and weight of the load, as well as the distance to be covered.
Manual transport was the transport system par excellence in mountainous regions, where access for animals and vehicles was impeded or very difficult.
