What is the gerla and what was it used for?
The gerla is a basket, generally large, cone-shaped, equipped with straps for carrying loads on the shoulders.
It consists of a rectangular wooden base on which a framework of vertical slats is fixed.
If it is made of sparse slats, the framework of rods is held together by 2 circles of rods, one placed halfway up the height of the gerla, the other at the upper end (also called the mouth).
If it is tightly woven, the scaffolding rods support a dense weave of rods placed perpendicularly along the entire height and the basket appears to be closed.
The gerla with widely sparse slats is larger and less versatile than the tightly woven one and was mainly intended for transporting foliage and hay.
