Why was haymaking such an important time for farmers?
The quantity of hay harvested determined the livestock's feeding during the entire winter period. Based on the amount of hay available, the breeder estimated the number of animals he could feed during the winter season. If the hay supply was not sufficient in relation to the number of animals owned, it could be necessary to sell some livestock during the autumn fairs, or entrust them to third parties for the winter, losing, for the wintering months, the rights to milk production.
