How was hay transported?
Once the drying process was completed, the hay was raked into piles or arranged in neat rows (windrows) to prepare it for harvesting and transport to the barn.
Various transport systems were used depending on the position of the agricultural land and its conformation. When possible, the hay was loaded onto a wagon or, in the mountains, onto a sled; otherwise, it was transported by carrying it on the shoulders (with a basket, a bundle or a canvas).
If present, natural gullies, slopes and cliffs were used to lower the hay (with the overhead wire) from the meadows located in higher areas to the valley. The hay was tied with ropes or placed inside bags or nets, which were started from the top and allowed to slide along the suspended metal wire to the arrival point located at the bottom.
