What is the double yoke and what was it used for?
The double yoke is a wooden tool for attaching a pair of draft animals, usually oxen, to carts and ploughs. It consists of a wooden beam that is arched at the point of support on the bodies of the two animals, equipped in the centre with an iron ring (chiovolo) and more rarely a wooden one for attaching, thanks to a wooden or iron peg (cavicchio), the yoke to the drawbar of the cart or to the whiffletree (in the case of pulling a plough or an harrow).
