What is the saddle and what was it used for?
The saddle (bardella) is a small saddle not suitable for riding that is fixed, thanks to the girth (a sturdy leather strap), to the horse's back and that has large metal or leather buckles on the sides that allow the cart shafts to be attached.
The function of the saddle was to allow the cart (or the plough thanks to the whiffletree) to proceed in the same direction as the animal.
