What is the most common breed of cow in Switzerland and what are its characteristics?
The most widespread breed of cow in Switzerland is the Brown Alpine. The Brown Alpine is a breed originating from central Switzerland and has practically become a national symbol. It is characterized by a brown or gray-brown coat, a robust constitution and a notable ability to adapt even to poor and rough terrain. It is bred for both milk and meat production, with a slight prevalence for milk. Between 1700 and 1800, Switzerland exported this breed to the USA, where, following cross-breeding, a new breed, the Brown Swiss, originated, which produces a greater quantity of milk. Due to this productive aptitude, the Brown Swiss is today present in the genetics of most of the Brown Alpine cattle in Switzerland, given that it was imported into Switzerland, both as an actual animal and as sperm, and crossed with Brown Alpine cattle.
