How do cow horns tell the age of the animal?
The horn normally grows regularly until the age of three, after which, for a certain period, anemia of the horn matrix occurs. This causes a decrease in the horny envelope which gives rise to the formation of a deep ring-shaped furrow. This phenomenon is repeated annually, so each year there will be a ring-shaped furrow: the number of furrows present, increased by two, indicates the age of the animal.
