What is a winnowing fan and what was it used for?
The winnowing fan, or sieve, is an agricultural tool used to clean cereals, separating seeds of different qualities and removing impurities by ventilation. There are two main types: the hollow-bladed winnowing fan, similar to a wooden shovel, reinforced with iron elements, and the winnowing fan, similar to a large basket, usually made of wicker. These tools were used outdoors, throwing cereals into the air against the wind, dispersing the chaff and separating the lighter waste grains from the heavier good ones.
