What is the sieve and what was it used for?
The sieve is an agricultural tool used to separate grains from chaff, straw fragments and other impurities, and this operation could be carried out both outdoors and indoors. Similar to a large sieve, it consists of a wide, low circular wooden frame, with a bottom made of interwoven metal wires that form holes of different sizes depending on the function. During the sieving process, the grain was passed through the holes by swinging the tool with rotary movements. For the first cleaning, a sieve with wide holes was used, allowing the grain to fall through while straw fragments and ears remained in the frame. For the second cleaning, a sieve with narrower holes was used, which retained the good quality grains while letting the smaller ones pass through, along with weed seeds, pebbles and earth. The sieve was mainly used after winnowing, alternating with the winnowing fan.
