What else was measured with the bushel?
The bushel was also used as a measure of capacity for the transport of liquids, especially wine, corresponding in Ticino to a capacity of between 8 and 22 pints depending on the region (11-20 litres). With the introduction of the litre, the bushel lost its function as a unit of measurement, but is still used today to indicate the wooden container.
In some regions, the bushel could also serve as a measure of agricultural surface area: the size of fields was not evaluated based on length or width, but rather based on the estimate of the work to be done or the productivity of the land. Therefore, the measurement of a field could be determined by the number of bushels of wheat needed to sow it, for example, a field of 10 bushels represented a sufficient area for sowing 10 bushels of wheat.
