In most cases, eggs were purchased from silk mills (establishments for the processing and spinning of silk), from specialized breeders and retailers, or from the competent cantonal authority. They could also be obtained on their own, from eggs laid the previous year.
Many went to Como, where it was easier to find eggs of Asian origin, appreciated for the quality of their yarn.
