What are the batten and the comb and what was their use?

The batten is a part of the loom, hung by two vertical rods to the frame, equipped with an oscillating movement, at least as long as the width of the loom, on which the comb is secured.
The comb is made up of a series of parallel vertical slats (metal or cane) through which all the warp threads passed. The latter were distributed between the slits according to precise patterns, depending on the type of yarn used and the type of fabric desired.
The batten and comb had the function of beating and compressing the weft thread against the warp, thanks to the oscillating movement impressed by the weaver once the shuttle had passed.
