How were the fibers and fabrics dyed?
Before proceeding to the actual dyeing, the fibers and fabrics had to be prepared for the absorption of the color thanks to a specific process called “mordanting”. Once this preliminary phase was completed, the fibers or fabrics were immersed in the dye bath and then left to dry. Wool was dyed in fiber, that is, by immersing the clean (but not spun) fiber in the dye bath, while linen and hemp were generally dyed in the form of fabrics (after weaving).
