What is resist printing?

Resist printing is a printing technique that prevents the color from fixing in some parts of the fabric, thanks to the use of glues or resins that were applied and left to dry naturally for 3-6 months. It was carried out using a tampone (stamp), which was covered with glue and printed with mallet blows, so that, once the fabric was immersed in the dye bath (in Ticino mainly indigo blue), the decorations remained the original color of the fabric. The uncolored parts of the fabric (reserves) could then be dyed with shades different from the dye bath: in Val Colla and Valle Verzasca, green and yellow reserves were in fashion, while the most commonly used color in Valle di Blenio was red. In Valle Leventina and Valle Riviera, however, the reserve was usually not colored.
