How were the glues used in dyeing and reserve printing prepared?
The recipes for the glues used in dyeing and reserve printing were secret and were passed down only orally from dyer to apprentice after 4-5 years of apprenticeship. Those who did not keep the secret risked very severe sanctions and in some cases even the death sentence.
Some of the ingredients that could be found in the glues were beeswax, clay, rubber, lead and verdigris.
