What is the etymological origin of the word rabbit?
The word rabbit is linked to the Latin word “cuniculus” which means underground hole, in reference to the holes dug by wild rabbits. With domestication, from being shy and nocturnal, accustomed to living in burrows, the rabbit becomes sociable and therefore the link with the etymological origin of the term is gradually lost but remains in the adjective “cunicolo”.
