What is cecotroph?
Rabbit feces are of two types. One type, which can be easily observed, consists of dark, dry balls, about 1 centimeter in diameter. They are made of undigested fiber, have little odor, and are solid but crumbly in consistency.
The other type of feces, which make up about 1/3 of the feces produced daily, has a soft consistency, is moist, covered in mucus, and consists of small balls stuck together. This type of feces is called cecotroph and the rabbit collects it directly from the anus at the time of excretion and ingests it without chewing it. The ingested cecotroph, protected by mucus, remains in the stomach for about 3-6 hours, after which its contents are assimilated in the small intestine.
