Why can rabbits reproduce at a higher rate than other animals?
In the rabbit, ovulation occurs in conjunction with mating. Ovulation does not occur with a specific cyclicity, as it does in other animal species, but is determined by intercourse. Ovulation is induced by neurohormonal stimuli and this is why we speak of a polyestrous animal with induced ovulation. During intercourse, in fact, some erogenous zones are stimulated that contain a multitude of tactile receptors (in addition to olfactory and visual stimulation) from whose stimulation a nervous message is released that is then transformed into a hormonal message. This is why the rabbit is ready for a new gestation just one hour after giving birth.
