What is meant by commercial hybrid?
A commercial hybrid is an animal obtained by crossing individuals from different bloodlines (and therefore not related), or different breeds (genetically distant from each other) with the aim of obtaining superior production results (in terms of yield at the time of slaughter, but also of adaptability to intensive or semi-intensive farming, resistance to disease, etc.).
The choice of breeds that will give the hybrid is based on the characteristics that are intended to be transferred from each breed to the hybrid and each of these breeds will be selected in order to have the maximum prominence (and maximum heritability) of the desired character.
Hybrid subjects born thanks to cross-breeding present the characteristics of the parents in a more accentuated way and, compared to these, have overall better productivity (this is due to the phenomenon of heterosis or hybrid vigor).
In intensive farming, cross-breeding is widely used, the most common of which is that between the "New Zealand White" and the "Californian" breeds.
It is important to point out that it is not possible to implement an internal comeback (i.e. start hybrid subjects on a breeding career to replace breeders who have reached the end of their career) by mating hybrid subjects, as the offspring of hybrid subjects would give much lower and poorer results than the parents from which they were born (Parents). When the Parents have exhausted their ability to procreate at the desired rate (generally after 18-24 months) it will therefore be necessary to purchase new hybrids (Parents) to have a new batch of breeders.
