In the past, who were the main buyers of rabbits?
As with other meats and animal products, rabbit products and meat in particular were mainly intended for the wealthy population. However, for a long time, delicacies based not only on domestic rabbit but also on wild rabbit or hare were served on the plates of the lords, since hunting was a widespread practice among the upper classes. Emblematic in this regard is the fate of the smallest of the Brissago Islands, still known as the Rabbit Island. In fact, after having been the site of a convent of the order of the Humiliate between the 13th and 16th centuries, it was inhabited by a considerable number of these herbivores with which, around the 18th century, it seems, people dabbled in the art of hunting.
