What are the first numerical data that allow us to quantify rabbit farming in Switzerland and Ticino?
The rabbit sector was included in the federal livestock censuses only in 1931, more than half a century after the first survey in which horses, oxen, cows, goats, sheep and pigs were counted but none of the farmyard animals. The data provided, which was also optional, counted that year over 820,000 rabbits (46,000 in Ticino) distributed among approximately 123,000 owners (7,800 in Ticino), of which 45,000 were exclusively dedicated to agriculture. However, it is estimated that the rabbit population actually exceeded one million. Among the cantons with the highest number of these herbivores in relation to the inhabitants was also Ticino which, with 29 rabbits for every 100 people, ranked third.
