How did the tradition of the Easter bunny hiding chocolate eggs originate?
The rabbit, like the egg, has been a symbol of fertility and rebirth since ancient and pre-Christian times. This has led to its recurring use in the past, particularly during spring rites and customs. The gift of eggs dates back to the Persians and was only later taken up and revised by Christian tradition during Easter celebrations. For its part, the rabbit, with its proverbial fertility, seems to have been intertwined with eggs and Swiss Easter rituals since the 17th century, taking inspiration from the German Lutheran church. The first chocolate eggs date back to the 19th century.
