What is the wedge and what was it used for?
The wedge is a tool, usually made of iron, that has the shape of a parallelepiped with a beaked side. It is often used today to split firewood. Lumberjacks used, or still use, the wedge to direct the fall of the tree during the felling operation or to prevent the saw blade from getting stuck in the trunk during cutting. The wedge is inserted into the crack created with the axe in the tree thanks to strong pressure, generally applied with a mallet.
