How were the logs transported from the forest to the valley?
Transport could be by land, by water or by air.
Land transport could be by rolling (a dangerous practice because the log could acquire too much speed by rolling and become uncontrollable), by dragging, thanks to the use of sleds or hooked levers, or by using animal power (see draft animals).
River transport involved entrusting the logs to the current of a river to take them downstream, but in fact this system could only be used for logs capable of floating (light specific weight), such as larch, fir, pine, but not for other types of wood, such as chestnut, ash, black locust or beech.
Air transport was via a skyline cable system (filo aerea), a rudimentary free-fall cableway that connected, thanks to a suspended metal wire, a starting point (above) to a finishing point (located lower down).
